2012 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The granddaddy of suvs. introductionthe chevrolet suburban can tow a sizable trailer. It can safely transport up to nine passengers. Launched during the great depression in 1936, the suburban was last completely redesigned for the 2007 model year.  the suburban can hold 137 cubic feet of cargo, or up to nine passengers and 45 cubic feet of cargo, or myriad combinations in between. Two weight classes are offered, the normal 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500. The 1500 and 2500 are available in ls and lt trim levels, and the 1500 is also available in a more luxury-oriented ltz trim level.  suburban 1500 models come with a 5. 3-liter v8 engine of 320 horsepower, 335 pound-feet of torque and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for a suburban 1500 is an epa-estimated 15/21 mpg city/highway.  suburban 2500 models get a 6. 0-liter v8 with aluminum block and heads and variable valve timing rated at 352 horsepower and 382 pound-feet of torque. It also comes with a 6-speed automatic. Suburban 2500 4wd is rated at a woeful 10/15 mpg. Sadly, a diesel engine is not available.  the suburban 2500 uses a different transmission, steering gear, brake parts, suspension, alternator, wheels, tires, axles and fuel tank than the 1500 series. The primary reason for selecting the 2500 over the 1500 is for its greater towing capacity. A suburban 2500 4wd is rated to tow up to 9,400 pounds, or 9,600 pounds with 2wd. A suburban 1500 4wd is rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds.  all engines are e85-compatible, which means they will run on 85-percent ethanol fuel, and all have active fuel management (afm) which switches off half the cylinders when the additional power or idle smoothness isn't needed. Fuel economy with e85 is a dismal 11/16 mpg for the suburban 1500, however. The epa hasn't published e85 fuel economy for the suburban 2500, perhaps because it involves single-digit numbers.  changes for 2012 are relatively minor. A new hard-drive navigation system, integrated into an am/fm/xm/cd stereo, includes a usb port, time-shift recording capability, and the hardware for siriusxm weather service. The standard stabilitrak stability control system now includes electronic trailer sway control and hill start assist. Suburban 1500 ls 4wd 45,065) models add the autotrac system that has on-pavement all-wheel-drive ability (no two-speed transfer case with low range). A 40/20/40 split front bench seat with fold-down armrest and storage is available.  options include a trailer package 230), which includes an active two-speed transfer case with 4wd 330); an integrated trailer brake controller 200); a convenience package with adjustable pedals, remote start, rear park assist, and rear camera display in the rearview mirror 1,060); locking differential 295); 3. 42:1 axle ratio; and engine block heater 75).  suburban lt 2wd 44,435) and lt 4wd 47,280) add leather seating, heated front seats, bose premium sound, automatic climate control, automatic locking rear differential, remote start, rear park assist, adjustable pedals, fog lamps, and two more 12-volt power outlets (for a total of five). Lt models offer the new hdd navigation system with am/fm/xm/cd stereo, usb port, time-shift recording capability, and siriusxm weather service 2,500; a rear-seat entertainment system 1,395); and other options not available on the ls.  suburban ltz 2wd 55,115) and ltz 4wd 58,115) come with perforated leather seating surfaces, the new hdd navigation described above with xm navtraffic and rearview camera, bose centerpoint surround sound, second-row bucket seats, heated and cooled front seats, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel, autoride suspension with rear air assist and self-leveling, side blind spot assist, and other features.  the z71 off-road package is offered only on the lt trim level, in 2wd 1,535) or 4wd 1,585). Safety-related options include rear park assist, and side blind zone alert. walkaroundsuburban's profile is elegant in its simplicity, no lines drawing the eye up or down, just a smooth clean surface from one end to the other like an aircraft. Big boxes are best carried in big boxes, not sloping hatchbacks.  the suburban has a square-jawed face that's smooth and rugged at the same time, a twin to the shorter tahoe. The mesh grille (bright on 1500, black on 2500) is split by a gold chevy bowtie, and the daytime running lights use separate lamps and can be switched off for after-dark campground arrivals. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and a good indication of gm's solid body quality on the current generation of trucks.  the hood has two long bulges at its sides, reaching almost from windshield to grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome; we call them a good way to keep such a large expanse of otherwise-flat steel from fluttering, just as long-cab pickups have grooves on the roof. For aesthetics we would prefer if the roof-mounted antenna were centered but then long, flat cargo on the roof might present a problem.  the rear liftgate is vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Rear wiper coverage is average at best. Some are nearly void of chrome while the z71 adds machismo with sizable fender flares and side steps so short drivers can get in and tall ones can mess up their pant legs.  the standard wheels are five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum. Polished wheels are available. Also available are 20-inch wheels that look good, but we think they are too big for grown-ups. Taller tire sidewalls yield a better ride and in most consumer-magazine testing those large-diameter wheels don't go, stop or handle any better, they just ride harder so we prefer the 17-inch wheels. With all the seats in place and set for passengers, 45. 8 cubic feet of cargo space is available, with 90 behind the second row with the third row removed. But there is a nice compartment over the left wheel well, for tools, flashlights, snow chains or the like.  smart storage space abounds. The huge console has deep storage and a tray on top. There are two cup holders in a removable tray forward of the console, and one in each wide door pocket. The seats are designed for american comfort rather than european firmness, and can be ordered with heat and cooling. The front seats are bucket seats on most models, b.

2007 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A brand-new example of an old truck. introductionthink of the 2007 chevy silverado classic as a completely restored vintage truck. Or perhaps it's more like the discovery of a brand-new vehicle sitting in an old, abandoned warehouse.  chevy truck introduced an all-new line of silverado pickups for 2007 and we love them. The 2007 silverado classic is exactly the same truck as the 2006 silverado, which was essentially the same as the 2005, 2004, and 2003 models.  these previous-generation trucks are sold on the basis of price. The 2007 silverado classic models retail for about $2,000 less than the newer generation models. And that's not counting rebates and incentives.  the newer generation silverado is vastly superior to the outgoing classic by every measure and it will almost certainly hold its value better.  still, the silverado classic is a solid truck. It certainly beats a used truck. It's quick and it's comfortable. Boxed and hydroformed frame rails give it a strong, rigid platform, like a rock, as its ads used to say. Heated leather seats, xm satellite radio and other options make long days spent in a silverado classic comfortable. Three trim levels are available: w/t, ls, and lt, plus a sporty ss. Avaialble only as a crew cab with a 6-foot, 6-inch bed (instead of the standard 1500 crew cab's 5-foot, 8-inch bed), the 1500hd hauls 3,129 pounds with 2wd, 2,838 pounds with 4wd, and tows up to 10,300 pounds. Power is provided by the big 6. 0-liter v8 that's used in the 2500hd/3500.  standard equipment on all silverado classics, even the most basic w/t (work truck, for $15,840), are am/fm stereo, tilt steering, driver information center, a chromed front bumper, painter rear step bumber, and 17-inch painted steel wheels. Air conditioning is now listed as an option 570). Extended cabs 21,465) come with automtic transmission.  moving up to ls trim (starting at $20,075) adds air conditioning, cruise control, a cd player, cloth instead of vinyl upholstery, and an expanded list of options. Ls extended cabs 23,940) come with automatic transission, and crew cabs 24,965) come with the 4. 8-liter v8.  silverado lt (starting at $23,350) is more luxurious, with carpeting, upgraded upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and power windows, locks and mirrors. Again the crew cab version 28,515) comes with more, including the 5. 3-liter v8. Lt2 and lt3 option packages add yet more equipment, but both price and specific content depend on cab style, driveline, and other factors. Add a heavy-duty locking rear differential 325), fog lamps 140), and lt245/70r17 all-terrain tires 200) for serious off-roading.  silverado classic ss 33,280) is a performance model equipped with a high-output 345 horsepower vortec 6000 6. 0-liter engine designed for quick acceleration and relaxed cruising. Ss gets a high-performance z60 chassis package; optional 20-inch wheels and tires; and special exterior and interior trim. For the first time it is offered with 2wd as well as awd, the former giving this performance truck an 8100-pound towing capacity.  a hybrid option 1,500) is available in several states. Crew cab models offer a panasonic dvd passenger entertainment system 1,295) and rear-seat audio controls. Extended cabs and crew cabs offer a power sunroof 795). A passenger-s. walkaroundthe styling of the 2007 chevrolet silverado classic has an edgy angularity that the new silverado has abandoned in favor of a smoother, more aerodynamicaly integrated appearance. The mid-size colorado pickup still shares the classic's bold design cues; but otherwise chevy trucks (tahoe, suburban, avalanche, silverado) have all moved on to the new look.  one of silverado classic's most distinctive features are the way its headlights angle down at the top, like the determined eyebrows of a marine drill sergeant. A large band runs across the middle of the grille punctuated in the middle by a big, gold chevy bow tie. All of this seemed smoothly integrated into the front end, at least until we saw how much more smoothly the new silverado was put together. The classic's flared engine hood and squared-off wheel openings continue its aggressive theme down the sides of the truck. In the rear are bulging taillamps that maintain the chevrolet family look yet uniquely identify the silverado classic.  silverado classic's large door openings make getting in and out easier, and the door handles are big and easy to grab. Optional puddle lamps mounted beneath the big side mirrors light the ground along the sides of the truck, handy in the city as much as in the woods. Heavy-duty models have running lights on the roof, tailgate, and leading and trailing edges of their bulging rear fenders. They add visibility for improved safety. Indentations stamped into the inner bed walls can hold boards to form bulkhead dividers or a second floor for two-tier loading. The silverado's load floor is 31. 6 inches above the ground on 2wd models, and 33. 7 inches with 4wd. That's relatively low, and low is good when loading heavy cargo. Standard-box beds are 78. 7 inches long; long boxes are 97. 6 inches long. Both are 64. 8 inches wide at the floor. The crew cab's short box is 69. 2 inches long and 60. 2 inches wide at the floor. All three measure 50 inches wide between the wheel housings. interiorinside, the silverado classic is roomy and comfortable. The seats are big and cushy, though we don't always find them comfortable for long trips. The standard front bench seat can seat three, giving extended cab and crew cab models a six-person capacity. It's split 40/20/40, available in cloth or vinyl, and the middle part folds down to become a center console/armrest. We wouldn't want to ride across the state back there, but three adults can fit and be reasonably comfortable for a short trip. The rear-seat bottom folds up to provide space for cargo, but it's still in the way when trying to carry a lot of stuff, and the floor is not flat. The entire rear seat assembly can be removed with a wrench and lifted out through the door when cargo capacity is more important than passenger space.  crew cabs offer roomy rear seats and additional interior cargo space. The back seats in crew cab models are very comfortable, similar to the rear seats in a suburban or tahoe. The rear seats can be flipped down, like those in a suburban, to provide a big, secure cargo area.  optional bucket seats are more comfortable and adjust every which way. We like both the premium cloth and the optional leather. The bucket seats are separated by a deep center console that holds lots of stuff. The top of the lid features a nice rubber-lined indention handy for small items, though it would be even better if the rubber was an insert that could be removed for cleaning. The top of the console is angled forward, which seems unfortunate because clipboards and other items placed there tend to slide off. A big coat hook makes picking u. 2007 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, the ultimate towing suv. introductionthe chevy suburban has been thoroughly redesigned for 2007, which means it might be called 'all new,' although it seems odd to apply those words to something that's been around for 70 years. This is the 11th generation of the venerable suburban. And despite the fact that the current times might be less friendly to the trusty old truck than before, with vehicles of its size being demonized for causing the melting of icecaps and whatnot, the suburban is no dinosaur. And it is loved by those who need it. It's available in light-duty 1500 or heavy-duty 2500 chassis. The latest generation of its 5. 3-liter vortec engine (downsized to 325 cubic inches from 350 in the old days) has an aluminum block and makes 310 horsepower with 355 pound-feet of torque. The optional engine is a new 6. 0-liter mill, with an aluminum block and heads and variable valve timing, making 366 horsepower and 380 pound-feet.  the popular 5. 3-liter (1500, 4wd) is epa-rated at 15 city and 20 highway miles per gallon, on regular unleaded, and it can also run on ethanol); the same truck with the 6. 0-liter engine is rated at 14/18. Full length airbag curtains are optional, but front side airbags are not available.  another 6. 0-liter engine, with an iron block, comes with the 2500 models. The 2500 also adds hydroboost to the brakes, a heavier suspension with leaf springs, and 16-inch truck tires. The 2500 4wd is rated to tow 9400 pounds, while the 1500 can tow 8000.  the styling changes to the new suburban are subtle but significant, and handsome. The windshield is raked for better aerodynamics, and the chrome has been swept off the ls and lt. Inside, the dashboard has been lowered and instrument panel finally made tidy. The seats have been raised, giving a commanding view of the road with that lowered dashboard; with optional adjustable pedals, a driver of any size can achieve a comfortable and confident driving position.  the suburban can seat from six to nine passengers, depending on the seats that are chosen. There are 137. 4 cubic feet of storage behind the front seats, with the second row folded and third row removed. Behind the raised third row, there are still 45. 8 cubic feet. This (and towing) is what the vehicle is all about: passengers and cargo. However, unlike a growing number of suvs, the seats don't fold flat into the floor, unfortunate for outdoorsmen who view the cargo compartment as an occasional sleeping area. Setting a nine-foot fly rod in there without having to break it down is still a real luxury, however, and the back of the 'burb will accept other long items that are awkward to load into smaller rigs.  the all-new frame is stronger, stiffer and fully boxed (49 percent stiffer and 35 percent more resistant to twisting). The rigid new frame enabled the suspension to be redesigned, and a rack-and-pinion steering system is used, for the first time. The front track has been widened by three inches, and the rear by one inch. This suburban rides and handles much sweeter than any before it: less undulation and more precision.  considering the vehicle weighs nearly three tons (5745 pounds), the acceleration is strong, and the powerful sound of the engine under full throttle is satisfying. The new generation of this engine has an aluminum block and makes 310 horsepower with 355 pound-feet of torque. The optional 6. 0-liter engine 1095) is all aluminum with variable valve timing, making 366 horsepower and 380 pound-feet.  another 6. 0-liter engine, with an iron block, comes with the 2500 models. They all have a tow/haul mode, which reduces shifting and makes the shifts quicker, so the transmission doesn't work so hard when pulling a big load. Other options include a locking rear differential, engine block heater, transmission oil cooler, power adjustable pedals, remote starter, and audio upgrades.  safety equipment on all models includes dual frontal airbags, anti-lock disc brakes with electronic proportioning, and stabilitrak, gm's electronic stability program with anti-rollover mitigation and traction control. Full length airbag curtains with rollover detection are optional, but front side airbags are not available. It's a twin to the shorter tahoe. The mesh grille is split by a gold chevy bowtie, and the headlights are all business, nothing fancy, just good-looking function: big near-rectangles at the corners. They're halogen and do an excellent job of lighting up the road. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and an indication that gm is improving its build quality.  rake has been added to the windshield, improving the aerodynamics and looks. The hood has two long bulges at its sides, extending from almost the windshield to almost the grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome.  the rear liftgate is still vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Split doors are not available.  the suburban lt looks clean and stylish from the side, without chrome trim. Too bad the thick five-spoke wheels are boring, costing the 'burb an opportunity to look real sharp. Seventeen-inchers are standard but 18-inchers are optional, as are 20-inchers that are too big for grown-ups and degrade the ride. interiorthe chevy suburban can seat six to nine passengers. Many other suvs can carry seven passengers without taking up so much space on the road, but the passengers are cramped (and these suvs can't ever carry nine). A motor drives the seatbacks down a. 2001 chevrolet silverado 1500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Advanced engineering in a familiar package. introductionford may have the best-selling pickup in america, but a whole lot of americans still prefer a chevrolet. While dearborn's most recent light-duty pickup has taken on a windswept, aerodynamic look, and dodge has carved a niche with its vaguely retro, little big-rig theme, chevrolet has stuck with a more conservative shape, bluff in the nose and square in the shoulders. Chevrolet feels its customers are more comfortable with traditional truck styling. So when the chevy pickup was totally re-designed, re-engineered and even re-named for 1999, its styling was updated but not radically changed.  at the same time, however, chevrolet caught up with (or even surpassed) the technology and refinement of the more radical looking ford and dodge. The silverado, as chevy calls its pickups now, is a great achievement, better than the previous 'c/k' truck in every respect. It rides better, handles better and stops quicker; it's faster and it's more comfortable. In fact, the silverado ranks as one of the most luxurious pickups we've ever driven.  for 2001, silverado adds even more power, convenience and durability. All extended-cab models now have two auxiliary rear doors, rather than just one on the curbside. Onstar is available on newer lt models. Three trim levels are available: base, ls, and lt. The 'half-ton' range includes both the 1500 series, with actual payloads ranging from 1593 to 2334 pounds (depending on bed, cab, and drive configuration), and the heavier-duty 2500 series with payloads in the 2612-3224-pound range. Just to make things as confusing as possible, there's also a 1500hd model with a crew cab body.  silverado 1500 models are available with a 4. 8-liter v8, a 5. 3-liter v8, and a 4. 3-liter v6. The 2500 is powered exclusively by a 6. 0-liter v8.  three-quarter-ton silverados are badged 2500hd and 3500, and offer payloads up to 6089 pounds. Look for those in a separate nctd. Com test drive. walkaroundsilverado's frame is the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever built. The front frame rails are hydroformed, a new process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape relatively large and complex components that used to be fabricated from smaller stampings. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. These feature a delayed-upshift mode for towing. They are excellent transmissions. interioras with the exterior design, the silverado interior reflects traditional chevrolet thinking. The doors and door openings are now the largest in the industry, while the cab is the roomiest.  the instrument package looks like a cross between what is found in the new corvette and what was used in the old c/k trucks. All use pleasant white-on-black graphics.  the sound-system control panel is located above the climate controls. Air conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders are built in for rear-seat passengers. A compass is incorporated into the lt model's overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed with a wrench and lifted out through the side door.  about the only thing we didn't like was the design of the interior door handles, which operate in an up-and-in arc and felt loose whenever we used them. The system calls for assistance automatically if the truck's airbags have deployed. driving impressionwe loved every mile we put on the silverado lt. It drives like a luxury car and is supremely smooth and quiet. That smooth, quiet, unified feel is largely due to the new chassis, which provides a 23-percent increase in stiffness. New mounting and isolation hardware reduces noise and vibration. A cast magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right side of the dash further reinforce the stiff body. Squeaks and rattles have been eliminated. This is one strong truck, and its chassis rigidity allows the suspension to soak up and manage bumps and ruts and tar strips so well that its overall ride behavior is near luxury. Even the rack-and-pinion system has a fairly wide dead spot in the center when cruising, which chevrolet says is designed to minimize steering corrections on the highway. That's enough to smoke the rear tires at will. The new engine is a much better small-block than before, and we recommend the 5. 3 over the smaller 4. 8-liter version.  the brakes are substantially improved over the old c/k brakes, and it's a welcome improvement. Braking force comes into play only an inch into the pedal travel, a welcome improvement over the mushy pedal on the previous pickup. A new feature called dynamic rear proportioning improves stability under heavy braking, whether the truck is loaded or empty. And it is the newest design from the big three detroit manufacturers. The silverado lt we drove is the smoothest, quietest, most civilized, best equipped, and most enjoyable pickup truck we've driven in many years.
