2012 chevrolet suburban review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The granddaddy of suvs. introductionthe chevrolet suburban can tow a sizable trailer. It can safely transport up to nine passengers. Launched during the great depression in 1936, the suburban was last completely redesigned for the 2007 model year.  the suburban can hold 137 cubic feet of cargo, or up to nine passengers and 45 cubic feet of cargo, or myriad combinations in between. Two weight classes are offered, the normal 1500 and the heavy-duty 2500. The 1500 and 2500 are available in ls and lt trim levels, and the 1500 is also available in a more luxury-oriented ltz trim level.  suburban 1500 models come with a 5. 3-liter v8 engine of 320 horsepower, 335 pound-feet of torque and a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy for a suburban 1500 is an epa-estimated 15/21 mpg city/highway.  suburban 2500 models get a 6. 0-liter v8 with aluminum block and heads and variable valve timing rated at 352 horsepower and 382 pound-feet of torque. It also comes with a 6-speed automatic. Suburban 2500 4wd is rated at a woeful 10/15 mpg. Sadly, a diesel engine is not available.  the suburban 2500 uses a different transmission, steering gear, brake parts, suspension, alternator, wheels, tires, axles and fuel tank than the 1500 series. The primary reason for selecting the 2500 over the 1500 is for its greater towing capacity. A suburban 2500 4wd is rated to tow up to 9,400 pounds, or 9,600 pounds with 2wd. A suburban 1500 4wd is rated to tow up to 8,000 pounds.  all engines are e85-compatible, which means they will run on 85-percent ethanol fuel, and all have active fuel management (afm) which switches off half the cylinders when the additional power or idle smoothness isn't needed. Fuel economy with e85 is a dismal 11/16 mpg for the suburban 1500, however. The epa hasn't published e85 fuel economy for the suburban 2500, perhaps because it involves single-digit numbers.  changes for 2012 are relatively minor. Safety-related options include rear park assist, and side blind zone alert. walkaroundsuburban's profile is elegant in its simplicity, no lines drawing the eye up or down, just a smooth clean surface from one end to the other like an aircraft. Big boxes are best carried in big boxes, not sloping hatchbacks.  the suburban has a square-jawed face that's smooth and rugged at the same time, a twin to the shorter tahoe. The mesh grille (bright on 1500, black on 2500) is split by a gold chevy bowtie, and the daytime running lights use separate lamps and can be switched off for after-dark campground arrivals. The bumper fascia reveals a low license-plate holder sandwiched by openings for tow hooks, with small round fog lamps at the corners like single teardrops falling from the headlamp eyes. The seam between the fascia and fenders is very tight, and a good indication of gm's solid body quality on the current generation of trucks.  the hood has two long bulges at its sides, reaching almost from windshield to grille; chevy calls these twin bulges the power dome; we call them a good way to keep such a large expanse of otherwise-flat steel from fluttering, just as long-cab pickups have grooves on the roof. For aesthetics we would prefer if the roof-mounted antenna were centered but then long, flat cargo on the roof might present a problem.  the rear liftgate is vertical, and the rear window opens independently, with both the manual and power liftgate, which is aluminum, reducing the weight and thus the effort to raise and lower it. Rear wiper coverage is average at best. Some are nearly void of chrome while the z71 adds machismo with sizable fender flares and side steps so short drivers can get in and tall ones can mess up their pant legs.  the standard wheels are five-spoke, 17-inch aluminum. Polished wheels are available. Also available are 20-inch wheels that look good, but we think they are too big for grown-ups. Taller tire sidewalls yield a better ride and in most consumer-magazine testing those large-diameter wheels don't go, stop or handle any better, they just ride harder so we prefer the 17-inch wheels. With all the seats in place and set for passengers, 45. 8 cubic feet of cargo space is available, with 90 behind the second row with the third row removed. But there is a nice compartment over the left wheel well, for tools, flashlights, snow chains or the like.  smart storage space abounds. The huge console has deep storage and a tray on top. There are two cup holders in a removable tray forward of the console, and one in each wide door pocket. 2004 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fold the rear seats and it can move two people and some serious cargo. In this respect, it stands apart from the herd of compact sport-utility vehicles, few of which offer true off-road capability. The liberty gives up some refinement and road agility to do this. On the road, it does not ride or handle as well as some of the other small suvs. But the liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekend yet need refinement, practicality and affordability during the week.  just two years old, the liberty debuted as a 2002 model. It was significantly improved for 2003 with improved on-road stability. For example, chrysler's enhanced accident response system (ears), which unlocks doors and turns on interior lights five seconds after an airbag deploys, is standard for 2004. Two engines are available: a 2. 4-liter inline-4 and a 3. 7-liter v6. A six-speaker stereo with cd player is standard. Air conditioning 850) is optional, however. Power windows and other features can be added as options. The optional v6 is available with manual transmission 850) or an automatic 1,675).  limited edition models offer upgraded interior amenties and a better grade of cloth upholstery. Serious 4wd adventurers may want the optional off-road group 765 for sport, $520 for limited), which includes skid plates for the front suspension, fuel tank and transfer case; a locking rear differential; heavy-duty engine cooling; p235/70r16 all-terrain tires; and tow hooks. walkaroundwith its seven-slat grille and round headlights, there's no question the liberty is a jeep.  the liberty's body is tall, providing the driver with a commanding view of the terrain ahead. In terms of exterior dimensions, the liberty fits between the jeep wrangler and grand cherokee. With an overall length off 174. 4 inches, it's slightly longer than the ford escape. It also features a roof basket, bolt-on fender flares, removable side steps, unique graphite-painted aluminum wheels, and a body-colored front fascia. It comes in a limited choice of colors: bright cactus green, light khaki, silver, and black.  a neat feature on all models: yanking hard on the outside door handle causes the glass hatch to swing up as the door itself is swinging out, which saves time and effort. Pulling on the handle with less force causes just the glass hatch to swing up. Also, the door swings open from the right, better for curbside pickups at the airport. interiorthe jeep liberty comes with a roomy interior that can accommodate five passengers and a generous amount of cargo, with good usable space behind the second row of seats. Sitting in the liberty gives the driver a sense of spaciousness with acres of headroom (best in class, according to jeep). Door panels are scalloped out for elbow rests, and a grab handle is provided on the passenger's side of the dash. Also, there's no seat-height adjustment. In short, i found the sport seats uncomfortable. But the cloth upholstery has a hard finish that feels like it'll hold up well. The renegade front seats are tailored with unique cloth center panels and vinyl bolsters. The front seats in the limited are more comfortable. Two adults should be happy here. Two full-size garbage cans fit side-by-side back there, something that can't be said for many suvs. Grocery-bag hooks and cargo tie-downs are provided to keep things from rolling around. Dropping the split rear seat is a one-hand operation in the liberty; the rear seat bottom stays in place. The cargo floor isn't perfectly flat when the rear seats are folded down, however, and that's my biggest gripe with this vehicle. Nor are the rear seats readily removable as they are in the rav4. Also, removing the rear headrests requires pressing two buttons at once to release them.  overall, the interior presents a round motif that looks contemporary, with round door handles, round instruments, round air inlets, a round horn pad. Textures and finishes are nicely done. Big gauges use black-on-beige graphics. The limited adds attractive satin chrome highlights to the instrument panel and doors. The renegade gets brushed aluminum (real aluminum) highlights on the instrument panel that give it a machined look consistent with the exterior theme.  the shifter is on the tall side, but works well. The available leather-wrapped steering wheel is comfortable and features well-designed cruise controls.  the accessory controls work well and intuitively. The power window switches are located on the center console, however, more awkward and less convenient than if they were on the door. The manually operated heating/air-conditioning controls work well, though the mode selector demands attention. The standard-size yukon can carry more weight than the equivalent-trim, longer yukon xl due to the xl's greater weight.  inside, the yukon features a simple, elegant dash that hints at aspirations for entry-luxury status. The yukon has three-row seating standard and can be configured for two to nine occupants. Seating in the first and second rows has plenty of room, but the third row is best left for kids and has to be removed for maximum cargo space.  engine choices are all v8s. The 320-hp 5. 3-liter v8 and denali's 403-hp 6. 2-liter v8 both have a system that shuts down half the cylinders under light loads to improve fuel economy. For better economy in daily driving, look to the hybrid models which pair a 6-liter gasoline v8 that switches off completely when not needed, and battery pack with dual electric motors inside the transmission to increase rated urban fuel economy by about 33 percent.  ride and handling characteristics are typical of large suvs. The yukon leans in turns and is not agile. All-wheel-drive models use autotrac, a system that can be engaged on dry pavement but does not repeal the laws of physics as some owners believe. Those who don't tow might be better served by a larger crossover, such as the gmc acadia, which gets better fuel economy due to lighter weight.  the current-generation gmc yukon dates from the 2007 model year, but the model line has been refined and expanded significantly since then. Tight tolerances between body panels and a thud closing a door invite comparison with other suvs.  the one-piece front end presents a friendly, welcoming face but without forfeiting the yukon's presence. The trademark grille with ruby-red logo and lower air intake ensure plenty of engine cooling. Sle and slt share a horizontal-bar grille, denali is distinguished by fine mesh.  door handles bridging deep recesses make for easy gripping in all seasons. Squared-off wheel wells carry forward a yukon signature styling cue. The independently hinged rear window is a nice touch (except hybrids), permitting easy loading of grocery bags and such.  the yukon hybrid has several styling cues that distinguish it from the other models. The upper grille is expanded while the lower is smaller and openings that would house fog lights and tow hooks are blocked off. Along the sides, the running boards are reshaped for improved aerodynamics and the wheel flares are slightly reshaped. At the back, the rear pillars, spoiler and center high-mounted stoplight have a unique shape, the tailgate is made of aluminum and has fixed glass, and led taillights replace the standard bulbs. The wheels are more aero efficient and the tires have lower rolling resistance. The spare tire and jack have been replaced by a tire inflation kit; a spare is optional. The result is a slightly better coefficient of drag to help improve fuel economy, if only by small amounts.  visually, the denali hybrid is linked more closely to the standard denali than to the standard hybrid. Head-on, the denalis are twins. Denali hybrids can be spotted by their enormous eight-spoke, 22-inch chrome rims. interiorthe yukon interior design is clean and uncluttered. Leather surfaces feel expensive, if not luxurious. The fit between panels and coverings is impressive, with tight tolerances. Less impressive is the finish of some of the hard plastic surfaces, which look better than they feel; lighter-color interiors convey the lux look much better than the dark colors.
