2004 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Fold the rear seats and it can move two people and some serious cargo. In this respect, it stands apart from the herd of compact sport-utility vehicles, few of which offer true off-road capability. The liberty gives up some refinement and road agility to do this. On the road, it does not ride or handle as well as some of the other small suvs. But the liberty is among the best of the small sport-utilities for drivers who need serious off-road capability on the weekend yet need refinement, practicality and affordability during the week.  just two years old, the liberty debuted as a 2002 model. It was significantly improved for 2003 with improved on-road stability. For example, chrysler's enhanced accident response system (ears), which unlocks doors and turns on interior lights five seconds after an airbag deploys, is standard for 2004. Two engines are available: a 2. 4-liter inline-4 and a 3. 7-liter v6. A six-speaker stereo with cd player is standard. Air conditioning 850) is optional, however. Power windows and other features can be added as options. The optional v6 is available with manual transmission 850) or an automatic 1,675).  limited edition models offer upgraded interior amenties and a better grade of cloth upholstery. Limited 22,750) and limited 4wd 24,260) come standard with the v6 engine and automatic transmission. Leather is available as part of a big option package 1,145) that also includes a programmable overhead console, power seat adjusters, deep-tint glass, power heated side mirrors, a security group, and an am/fm/cassette/cd stereo with steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and infinity speakers. Renegade 2wd 22,910) and 4wd 24,520) models come standard with the v6; heavy-duty five-speed manual transmission; air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; 16-inch graphite-painted aluminum wheels; power windows, mirrors, and locks; illuminated keyless entry; roof rack side rails; and many other features. Renegade 4wd models include a skid-plate package. Automatic transmission 825) is optional. A premium package 1,240) adds the automatic, power leather seats, and upgraded door trim panels, along with an overhead vehicle information center that allows the customer to program automatic locking, lighting, and other features.  side-impact airbags 490) are optional on all liberty models, and we highly recommend them. Serious 4wd adventurers may want the optional off-road group 765 for sport, $520 for limited), which includes skid plates for the front suspension, fuel tank and transfer case; a locking rear differential; heavy-duty engine cooling; p235/70r16 all-terrain tires; and tow hooks. walkaroundwith its seven-slat grille and round headlights, there's no question the liberty is a jeep.  the liberty's body is tall, providing the driver with a commanding view of the terrain ahead. In terms of exterior dimensions, the liberty fits between the jeep wrangler and grand cherokee. With an overall length off 174. 4 inches, it's slightly longer than the ford escape. It also features a roof basket, bolt-on fender flares, removable side steps, unique graphite-painted aluminum wheels, and a body-colored front fascia. It comes in a limited choice of colors: bright cactus green, light khaki, silver, and black.  a neat feature on all models: yanking hard on the outside door handle causes the glass hatch to swing up as the door itself is swinging out, which saves time and effort. Pulling on the handle with less force causes just the glass hatch to swing up. Also, the door swings open from the right, better for curbside pickups at the airport. interiorthe jeep liberty comes with a roomy interior that can accommodate five passengers and a generous amount of cargo, with good usable space behind the second row of seats. Sitting in the liberty gives the driver a sense of spaciousness with acres of headroom (best in class, according to jeep). Door panels are scalloped out for elbow rests, and a grab handle is provided on the passenger's side of the dash. Also, there's no seat-height adjustment. In short, i found the sport seats uncomfortable. But the cloth upholstery has a hard finish that feels like it'll hold up well. The renegade front seats are tailored with unique cloth center panels and vinyl bolsters. The front seats in the limited are more comfortable. Two adults should be happy here. Two full-size garbage cans fit side-by-side back there, something that can't be said for many suvs. Grocery-bag hooks and cargo tie-downs are provided to keep things from rolling around. Dropping the split rear seat is a one-hand operation in the liberty; the rear seat bottom stays in place. The cargo floor isn't perfectly flat when the rear seats are folded down, however, and that's my biggest gripe with this vehicle. Nor are the rear seats readily removable as they are in the rav4. Also, removing the rear headrests requires pressing two buttons at once to release them.  overall, the interior presents a round motif that looks contemporary, with round door handles, round instruments, round air inlets, a round horn pad. Textures and finishes are nicely done. Big gauges use black-on-beige graphics. The limited adds attractive satin chrome highlights to the instrument panel and doors. The renegade gets brushed aluminum (real aluminum) highlights on the instrument panel that give it a machined look consistent with the exterior theme.  the shifter is on the tall side, but works well. The available leather-wrapped steering wheel is comfortable and features well-designed cruise controls.  the accessory controls work well and intuitively. The power window switches are located on the center console, however, more awkward and less convenient than if they were on the door. The manually operated heating/air-conditioning controls work well, though the mode selector demands attention. The radio works well, but uses a separate and poorly located button to preset stations, an unnecessary distraction when driving.  a new option on liberty is uconnect, chrysler gro. driving impressionjeep lowered and re-tuned the liberty's s. 2014 jeep patriot review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. The patriot is a compact sport utility vehicle featuring classic jeep styling in an affordable package. While it will spend most of its life on city streets, the patriot includes components that provide it with off-road capability unparalleled by other vehicles in its class. The patriot shares its small-suv platform with the jeep compass, but provides off-road capability that its sibling does not. Three trim levels are available: sport, latitude and limited. Available transmissions include a five-speed manual, a new six-speed powertech automatic, and a continuously variable transmission (cvt) with manual shift mode. Building on the sport trim, the latitude adds 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated front seats, fold-flat passenger seat, air conditioning and a leather steering wheel with integrated audio controls, as well as power mirrors, windows and door locks. The limited is further equipped with a power driver's seat, leather upholstery, automatic climate control, satellite radio and a 6-disc cd/dvd player. Standard safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, electronic stability control with roll mitigation, traction control, side-curtain air bags for both rows of seating and a tire pressure monitor. New for 2014, front seat-mounted side airbags are now standard on all models. The jeep patriot carries over with minimal changes for 2014. A new six-speed powertech automatic transmission is offered, and front seat-mounted side airbags are now standard on all models, enhancing safety. 2008 jeep liberty review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, smoother and a little larger. introductionthe jeep liberty is all-new for 2008. It's slightly bigger and has a smoother ride, but it maintains the ruggedness of the previous version. The 2008 liberty is quite capable off road, one of the best in its class.  the 2008 jeep liberty is 2. 5 inches longer overall and its wheelbase is two inches longer than that of its predecessor. With heavily revised styling, the 2008 liberty is taller and more angular than the 2001-2007 models, reminiscent of the much-loved, rugged but crude 1990s jeep cherokee. Compared to recent jeep offerings such as the patriot and compass, the all-new 2008 liberty is more of a true jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling.  the only engine for 2008 is a carryover 3. 7-liter v6 that makes 210 horsepower. When it comes to fuel economy, the liberty's weight and powertrain provide numbers that are on the lower end of the class.  jeep has made an effort to refine the liberty and add premium options. Snow belt drivers will appreciate the new full-time all-wheel drive system available in addition to the carryover part-time system. Within its class, only the nissan xterra can claim as much off-road capability.  when they redesigned it, jeep engineers set out to give the 2008 liberty pleasant road manners and, when it comes to ride quality, they succeeded. The liberty rides firmly, but irons out most bumps quite well and is stable on the highway. The liberty sacrifices handling for off-road prowess, however. The liberty leans in turns and has a floppy feeling in quick changes of direction. It's this aspect that makes the liberty most comparable to the nissan xterra and ford escape. These three are more rugged, more capable off road than the honda cr-v, toyota rav4, and the new nissan rogue, which are lighter, more agile, and more carlike. If we were heading up a rough logging road, we'd be pleased to be in a liberty.  inside, the liberty has plenty of room for five. We view it as a step back in terms of materials quality and fit and finish, however. The previous liberty had more soft touch surfaces and closer panel gaps, while the current model has more hard-plastic surfaces. Still, it's not an unpleasant cockpit.  cargo room is a plus. The liberty's second row seats fold flat, as does the front passenger seat, to provide plenty of room for hauling boxes, bikes and life's other accessories.  with a maximum towing capacity of 5000 pounds, rugged off-road capability and plenty of cargo space, the 2008 jeep liberty is a good choice for small families or couples that tow boats or go camping. The models are sport 20,330), sport 4wd 21,940), limited 24,515), and limited 4wd 26,125). The lone engine is a 210-horsepower 3. 7-liter v6. The limited's premium sound group 395) adds jeep's uconnect wireless cell phone link to the sport's version.  safety features include the mandated dual front airbags, plus head-protecting side-curtain airbags with rollover sensors and front side airbags for torso protection. Active safety features include anti-lock brakes with brake assist, hill start assist, traction control, and electronic stability control with rollover mitigation. The antilock brakes have rough road detection; when rough conditions are detected, the system holds the brake pulses longer to better slow the vehicle. Hill descent control is standard on 4x4 models. Optional safety features include trailer sway control and rear obstacle detection. walkaroundwhen jeep introduced the liberty in 2001, it was the middle child of a three vehicle lineup. Now that it's redesigned for 2008, it's the middle child of a seven-vehicle lineup. Compared to recent jeep offerings such as the patriot and compass, however, it is more of a true jeep, with off-road prowess and bold, upright styling.  the 2008 liberty is unmistakable as a jeep. The 2008 model is 2. 5 inches longer and 0. 8 inch wider than the previous generation (2001-07), with a wheelbase that grows by 1. 8 inches. Its tall, upright, angular styling fits with the current jeep design idiom while also recalling the 1990s cherokee. It is the same platform used for the last model and it is shared with the dodge nitro. The big news here is the new rear suspension. It's an independent five-link unit that allows for greater interior room and better ride characteristics.  the most noticeable aspect of the front end is jeep's characteristic seven-slot grille, which is taller on this model. The grille is body color on sport, chrome on limited. The front fascia is body color on all, and the front air dam is removable to provide more ground clearance for off-roading.  from the side, the liberty looks like a junior commander, with tall windows in a squared off greenhouse. The limited's chrome theme extends to the side with chrome side trim and roof rails. These components are black on sport, and the roof rails are optional. Jeep has moved it under the floor for 2008. The tailgate also changes from a swing gate to a liftgate design, and separate opening rear glass is newly standard.  jeep says its competition is the honda crv, ford escape, toyota rav4 and nissan xterra. The 2008 liberty is approximately the same size as these vehicles, but is considerably heavier than all but the xterra. It is also more capable off-road than all but the xterra. interiorthough not luxurious, the new interior of the 2008 liberty is functional. Most drivers will like the high seating position. Head room in the front seat is plentiful, but the tallest drivers will want more available front leg room. The side mirrors are large and the cabin has a lot of glass, making for fine rear visibility.  the gauges are easy to spot and the controls are simple to use. The climate functions are controlled by three simple knobs and the radio and other vehicle controls are straightforward. There is a useful cubby on the center of the dash top, and sizable grab handle is located just above the smallish glove box. The center console is deep and has a removable tray on top. There is also a small tray next to the shift handle. In 4wd models, a small electronic switch replaces last year's transfer case lever.  we don't think the interior feels like an upgrade from the previous generation, however. The previous liberty had some nice materials and quality finishes that are lacking in this new version. The dash, for instance, is all plastic with no sof.

1994 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. introductionif only style counted in the highly competitive sport utility market, jeep's grand cherokee limited would be the hands-down winner. As it is, chrysler's ultimate jeep offering has sales figures that fall behind segment leader ford explorer and the chevy blazer/gmc jimmy offerings. It's held in high regard but penalized by a rather hefty price tag7---nearly $30,000 out the door depending on equipment and market.  the grand cherokee limited leads the segment in power with the optional 220 horsepower 5. 2-liter v8. This is an updated version-with sequential multi-port fuel injection-of chrysler's venerable 318 v8. The coefficient of drag (resistance as it moves through air) is . 44. While nowhere near the sleek contemporary coupe or sedan, this is very respectable for a 4wd vehicle.  the limited model includes protective body armor in the form of bumper fascias and 'cladding'-a stout molding protecting the rocker panels, lower fenders and doors. It is in body color with gold accents. Gold accents seem out of place on a sport utility vehicle-it's like chroming a shovel-but it is distinctive.  fit and finish, while more truck-like than car-like, appear to be equal to or better than other sport utility brands. interiorthe grand cherokee limited is a grand deceiver. Its looks, comfort and ride give very little clue to its serious off-road capabilities. The interior is a big part of this deception. It's cushy and more like a car. Yet visibility is better than most cars because of its more upright stance.  front and rear seats have adjustable headrests. The rear seat has a 60/40 split back, folding to allow room for longer cargo while providing rear seating room. Seats are covered in leather as a standard feature. Location and operation of controls and switches are on a par with other sport utility vehicles. A tilt wheel and sport utility cruise control are standard with the limited package. And, as is often the case with tilt wheels, it obscured some of the instruments.  while more comfortable than the ford explorer or the chevy blazer/gmc jimmy brands, the seats in the jeep grand cherokee need more lateral and lumbar support. But put a third person in the rear seat and it's a bit of a squeeze.  cargo volume is 40. 1 cubic feet. Fold the rear seatback forward and it is 79. 6 cubic feet. The spare tire intrudes into the cargo area.  interior lighting is good, with lights for the ashtray, cargo area, underhood, glove box, ignition switch and visor vanity mirrors. An overhead console is standard. Safety features are led by a driver's side air bag. Ar outboard passengers have three-point lap/shoulder belts. Side doors are reinforced with steel beams to help protect occupants in side-impact collisions. driving impressionthis is where jeep grand cherokee limited's grand deception really comes into play. The ride is surprisingly comfortable and smooth-not choppy and bumpy like many sport utilities. Also, it falls thankfully short of the mushy 'boulevard' ride. Ample power is there for steep grades, mud and sand. It adds a bit of harshness to the ride, which we liked.  the grand cherokee is exceptionally free of road noise for an off-road capable vehicle. Although we detected no intrusive squeaks or rattles, the vehicle we tested was new, with fewer than 50 miles on it. There was little or no fade. Also, there was no jerking or bumping during the computer-controlled pumping of brakes that is sometimes experienced with abs. summarywe like the jeep grand cherokee limited very much. It is pleasing to look at, easy to drive, comfortable on- or off-road and a strong performer. The price is high-exceeded only by the range rover. And ford explorer, with its limited package (but with only a 160-hp v6 engine) comes close for a little less. Price aside, we like the jeep grand cherokee limited best-but who but a few of us can put price aside?. Climate Control✔ Cruise Control

1999 jeep grand cherokee review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Do this in jeep's redesigned '99 grand cherokee limited and it takes off a bit slower than last year's model. Part of the reason is that the old 5. 2-liter v8 engine has been replaced with an all-new 4. 7-liter overhead cam v8. The minor loss in acceleration is offset by the refinement of the new engine. It accelerates smoothly, with none of the mechanical grumbling and rude roaring of the previous 5. 2-liter and 5. 9-liter engines. We'd call the big jeep more mature. walkaroundthe new jeep grand cherokee is 3 inches longer than the one it replaces, but its wheelbase is the same. It looks taller, bowed on top with a forehead look to the front of the roof. Its round lines look like paul bunyan took his sanding block to the previous sharp body creases.  underneath, the grand cherokee still sits atop live axles, like the previous model. The trend among competing sport-utilities is to use independent suspensions, but jeep's live axle is only a drawback on paper, as we note later. The jeep retains its unibody integrated truck frame-and-body design. This rare design strategy -- shared by the smaller jeep cherokee and the nissan pathfinder -- results in a grand cherokee that is lighter and more rigid than it would be using more traditional designs. With adjustments for similar equipment, jeep says the new grand cherokee is about 50 pounds lighter overall. Less weight and a tighter turning radius help make the bigger jeep more maneuverable.  two engines are offered. Jeep's 4. 0-liter inline-6 has been re-engineered for 1999. It's quieter, cleaner and more powerful, producing 195 horsepower -- up 10 horsepower from last year.  a new 4. 7-liter v8 is optional. With single overhead cams on each cylinder bank, it produces 235 horsepower, or 15 horsepower more than the previous 5. 2-liter pushrod v8. Torque is down slightly, which accounts for the diminished acceleration.  two familiar trim levels are available, laredo and limited, each with a long list of standard features.  base grand cherokees come with rear-wheel drive, but that seems like buying a louisville slugger just to hit rocks. Its simple but effective automatic locking center differential apportions torque to the front wheels whenever the rear wheels slip.  the quadra-drive system is optional on both the 6-cylinder and v8 models. Quadra-drive is the same system as quadra-trac ii, but it adds hydraulically locking front and rear differentials. By using three differentials, the system automatically sends torque front-to-rear and side-to-side whenever a wheel slips. And all three systems come with a low-range set of gears that can be used for serious traction situations. interiorrear legroom is tight. Climbing into the back seats is much easier than before, however, because the rear doors are wider.  more space is available for cargo because the spare tire was moved from its upright position on the left rear side of the cargo compartment to lay down under the load floor. Part of that impression comes from the high seating position. Controls and switches have been improved in feel and operation, including the jeep's once-balky turn signal/wiper combination stalk.  the front seats have highly padded longitudinal ribs, and the thickness of the padding reminds us more of house furniture instead of serious off-roader benches. But no news is good news here. Off-road, or driving down a bumpy, rutted rural lane, the jeep feels controlled and steady. The price for this capability is a tall, body-rolling ride. There's no need to slow down for rough railroad crossings in the grand cherokee.  steering is quick but isolated, despite a thorough restructuring of the front engine cradle and front suspension and steering component mounts. But that's the same for all of the top-selling sport-utilities. Like them, the jeep's still a truck, sitting tall, rolling side to side in corners and high winds.  the biggest improvement in the ride of the new grand cherokee is a newfound tendency to stay pointed straight ahead. A triangle link that replaces the panhard rod locating the rear axle is directly responsible for this improvement.  careful tuning of suspension mounts, and even drivetrain mounts, allows the live axles of the jeep a lot of compliant movement. The axles move and pivot on large bumps and dirt holes where the independent suspensions of other suvs reach their limits of travel, and ultimately toss the occupants about inside.  power is adequate with the new v8 and, aided by relatively light weight, the jeep feels faster and more responsive than most 6-cylinder suvs and the huge v8 tahoes and expeditions. One reason the spare was relocated to under the load floor was to give more visibility rearward. That's what it did for us. The grand cherokee requires fewer try-and-fail attempts to conquer obstacles. It's tougher to upset than any high-volume wagon (hummers and land rovers excepted).
