2000 dodge durango review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Refined for y2k. introductiondodge durango features big-rig looks to back up its off-road capability. The durango is bigger than the ford explorer and other so-called compact sport-utilities, but smaller than ford expedition or chevy tahoe. Yet it's more maneuverable than the expedition.  the durango is a good choice for large families. Its theater-style seating arrangement gives rear passengers a view of the road ahead. The durango is also a good choice for people who tow boats or other light to medium-sized trailer loads. There's lots of power available from the big 5. 9-liter v8, while a new 4. 7-liter v8 and automatic transmission combination promise greater refinement. Dodge revised the front suspension and steering system on 4wd durango models for 2000 in an effort to improve ride quality and responsiveness. And, did we mention styling?. lineuptwo trim levels are available, while a host of packages consolidate popular options. A new value-priced sport model joins the durango line for 2000. Distinguished by special badging, it comes standard with a short list of popular options. Slt trim includes a long list of luxury amenities, starting with leather upholstery.  now in its third model year, the durango line has been expanded to include three v8 engines: a 5. 9-liter v8, a 5. 2-liter v8 and, new for 2000, a 4. 7-liter v8. Last year's 3. 9-liter v6 has been dropped from the lineup.  dodge created its new 4. 7-liter magnum v8 from a clean sheet of paper. It's far more sophisticated than the other two available engines with a pair of single overhead camshafts (sohc) in place of the more traditional overhead-valve (ohv) design and produces its power more efficiently for its size. Rated at 235 horsepower and 295 foot-pounds of torque, the 4. 7-liter engine meets california's low emissions vehicle standards. This 4. 7-liter engine is epa-rated at 15/19 mpg on 2wd models.  a popular choice is the highly competent 5. 2-liter v8, rated at 230 horsepower and 300 foot-pounds of torque. That's a bit more robust than the expedition's optional 5. 4-liter v8 (230 horsepower, 325 pound-feet of torque) and compares favorably to the tahoe's 5. 7-liter v8 (255 horsepower, and 330 pound-feet of torque). The durango should make a better tow vehicle than an explorer. With the 5. 9-liter engine and 3. 92 differential, it's capable of pulling a trailer of up to 7,200 pounds. Chevy's tahoe is rated to pull 7,000 pounds and ford's expedition is rated for 8,000 pounds. Fuel economy for the 5. 9-liter dodge v8 is rated at 12/17-mpg city/highway verses 14/19 for the 5. 2-liter dodge v8, and adds $595 to the price.  two-wheel-drive versions were added for 1999. Both transfer cases use a manually operated shift-on-the-fly lever mounted on the floor. walkarounddodge durango doesn't look like other suvs. It makes a bold statement with its muscular styling. It looks sportier than ford, gm and many of the imported suvs. interioreight people can fit in the durango--six comfortably--with theater seating designed to give everyone a view out front. The back half of the roof is raised nearly 2 inches to increase rear-seat headroom and visibility. This raised portion is cleverly disguised with a roof rack.  second-row seats are quite comfortable, offering plenty of headroom and adequate legroom. Stable cupholders and rear heating/air conditioning controls add to comfort. Third-row seats are surprisingly comfortable for two people, who achieve adequate legroom by tucking their feet under the second row of seats. Getting in and out of that third row is easy: flip a lever and the second-row seatback folds forward, then tumbles out of the way allowing a quick entry or exit. It's one of the best third-row seating designs on the market.  when it's time to haul cargo, the tailgate lifts up and out of the way and the two rows of seats are easily folded down to provide a large, relatively flat floor. A trout bum could sleep back there. All durangos have a long, narrow storage compartment under the floor just inside the rear lift gate with enough space for the jack, flares and other roadside equipment. An additional storage compartment replaces the footwell when the optional third row is not ordered.  overall, the interior design is executed well. Matching plastic trim provides an organic appearance. The seats appear rather plain, but they are comfortable. Carpeting is carried through to the backs of the rear headrests, which do not have to be removed when the seats are folded down - a convenient, timesaving feature.  the driving position is comfortable with good visibility over an attractive rounded hoodline. Instruments are big and easy to read, though the speedometer appears busy with 2 1/2-mph hash marks. Power outside mirrors are easy to adjust with a big knob on the driver's door. Cupholders and storage trays are nicely designed, while a digital compass and other useful readouts are overhead. Large buttons on the leather wrapped steering wheel operate one of the better cruise control executions we've seen. driving impressionas sport-utilities go, the durango is fun to drive. We spent a week with the big 5. 9-liter magnum v8 in the washington area. It always feels willing to get down the road quickly with excellent throttle response and quick acceleration.  a daylong drive though the texas hill country west of san antonio showed us dodge's 5. 2-liter v8 also has lots of power for undulating highways and steep, rocky trails. The durango handled well when driven briskly down narrow roads with tight corners and sweeping turns. Compared to other sport-utilities, the durango feels sporty. Steering is precise and the suspension provides excellent transient response, crisply turning from left to right and back again. We'd drive a durango anywhere.  durango's competent off-road capability and on-road handling response don't come as a free lunch, however. We found ride quality on downtown washington's crumbling infrastructure a bit on the harsh side. It's a good setup for people who live in a dry climate, but want to be able to shift into ultimate off-road mode. It comes with everything above plus a planetary center differential. Shifting to full-time mode allows the front and rear axles to turn at different speeds, so the wheels don't fight each other in tight quarters yet traction is assured under all but the worst conditions. It also compares favorably to the full-size ford expedition, chevrolet tahoe and gmc yukon.  durango is practical, intelligently designed and easy to operate. It cuts a distinctive appearance among sport-utility vehicles. Overall, it's a good choice for people who want to step out from the crowd. model lineup2wd 25,975); 4wd 27,975). assembled innewark, delaware. options as testedquick order package 28g 915) includes slt trim, floor mats, roof rack, fog lights, hood insulation, six-way driver's seat; slt plus 2,060) includes leather seating surfaces, highback bucket seats, steering-wheel audio controls, overhead console, automatic dimming mirror, dual illuminated visor vanity mirrors, premium door trim, wood grain trim, cd/equalizer with eight infinity speakers. 2008 dodge nitro review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Mid-size suv is practical and distinctive. introductionthe 2008 dodge nitro is a mid-size sport utility vehicle distinguished from other suvs by its squared-off styling with exaggerated fender flares. Nitro shares its platform with the jeep liberty. It is 22 inches shorter than the dodge durango full-size suv.  the nitro looks and feels larger than its size, with a high seating position that suv owners like, and good cabin space. It features load 'n' go, a cargo storage system whereby the rear seats and front passenger seat fold totally flat in seconds; additionally, the cargo floor slides rearward out over the rear bumper, and can hold 400 pounds, making the loading of heavy objects much easier. The newer 4. 0-liter v6 is better than the old 3. 7-liter, with 50 more horsepower and fuel economy that's only one or two miles per gallon less. However the 4. 0-liter engine only comes in the top-of-the-line r/t model, which costs about $3200 more than the most popular slt. No matter which covering, the seats are very comfortable. The cabin is quiet thanks to heavy use of sound deadening material, and visibility out the rear and to the front corners of the nitro is excellent.  for a base price of $19,595, a nitro owner gets many safety features that are usually optional on other vehicles, such as side curtain airbags, an electronic stability program with traction control and brake assist, electronic roll mitigation and a tire-pressure monitor.  the nitro was introduced for the 2007 model year and it gets only minor changes for 2008. The only notable updates are standard trailer sway control and the availability of rear obstacle detection system. lineupthe 2008 dodge nitro comes as three models, sxt, slt and r/t. All are available with rear-wheel drive (2wd). The sxt is also offered with an optional automatic transmission and all-wheel drive. Standard equipment includes cloth upholstery, air conditioning, remote keyless entry with power windows and door locks, 115-volt power outlet, flat folding front passenger seat, 60/40 folding rear bench seat, am/fm/cd with mp3 and six speakers, sirius satellite radio, auxiliary input jack, tilt steering column, slate-colored molded front and rear fascias and fender flares, folding power mirrors, theft-deterrent system, rear window washer/wiper, roof rails, and p225/75r16 tires on steel wheels with wheel covers.  the slt 23,005) and slt awd 24,665) come standard with the automatic transmission. The slt adds yes essentials upholstery that dodge says is stain, odor and static resistant; leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls; six-way power adjustable driver's seat; heated exterior mirrors; vehicle information center; auto-dimming rearview mirror; universal garage door opener; fog lights; load 'n go cargo storage system with tie-down rails; overhead console; cruise control; compass; tinted windows; body-colored front and rear fascias and fender flares; and p235/65r17 tires on aluminum wheels.  the r/t 2wd 26,180) and r/t awd 27,840) feature a 4. 0-liter v6 making 260 horsepower, mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual shift capability. The r/t comes with a sport suspension with p245/50r20 goodyear eagle tires on chromed aluminum wheels. The r/t is equipped like the slt.  options for all three models include a power sunroof 895) and trailer tow package 820). Options for the slt and r/t include a rear dvd entertainment system (1,300), leather upholstery with heated front seats 830), and dodge's mygig multimedia infotainment system 1550), which has a navigation system with voice command and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to store music and photos. Also offered for slt and r/t is a convenience package 1,345) with rear obstacle detection, dodge's uconnect wireless cell phone link, remote engine starting, eight speakers and a subwoofer. The slt can be ordered with the r/t's sport suspension and chromed 20-inch alloy wheels 1,505).  safety equipment that comes standard on all models includes dual front air bags, head-protecting curtain side air bags, and a tire-pressure monitor. Abs with brake assist, traction control, and electronic stability control with dodge's trailer sway control are also standard. Rear obstacle detection is optional for slt and r/t 250).  all nctd prices are manufacturers suggested retail prices (msrp) that do not include destination charges and may change at any time without notice. walkarounddodge publicity makes a big thing about the nitro's looks, citing its so-called athleticism. We might call it brawny, but mostly it just looks boxy. The exaggerated fender flares are the only rounded parts in the styling. Every other angle is square-ish. It looks and feels larger than mid-size, which some will find to be a good thing.  from the front, it's unmistakably dodge. It's got that big crosshair grille, which looks much better in body color (r/t) than chrome (sxt, slt). It's intended to look like a cooling slot. It's a nice touch, and for such a small piece it goes a long way toward relaxing the nitro's blocky shape.  in silhouette, with its relatively upright windshield, very high beltline and rectangular windows, plus short front overhang, the nitro's shape is reminiscent of, say, a '62 dodge power wagon. But from the rear three-quarter angle, the lines around the rear glass are reminiscent of its bigger cousin, the jeep commander. The much narrower sidewall on the 20-inch tires doesn't appear to offer much defense against flats. interiorthe sxt comes in a basic cloth, but the cloth in the slt and r/t is something called yes essentials; dodge claims it repel stains, control odors and reduces static electricity. There are three big main instruments: speedo in center, tach on right and fuel and temp on left. They're very good looking and especially legible, with the digital information still visible in the sun because the three pods are thoughtfully shrouded. Chrysler does gauges right, and generally blows gm out of the water when it comes to handsome style and function. On the other hand, dodge trails gm when it comes to materials quality. Like most dodges, the nitro's interior materials are largely plastic and don't impart the feel of luxury or quality. A few more soft-touch surfaces would be nice.  there's good front seat legroom, and it feels like there's even more because the dashboard is narrow, making the cabin feel nothing like that in a minivan. The dash also has an insert over the center stack, about 6 by 9 inches with grippy rubber at the bottom, and it's perfect for, well, things. The glovebox is the full width of the passenger side.  rearview visibility is very good, with just windows back there, no attempt at swoopy styling with excess sheetmetal. And again, because the front fenders have no rise or real shape, it's easy to see the front corners of the vehicle, making parking a relief compared to many vehicles this size.  the square theme continues with the center stack and its instruments and buttons for the sound system and climate control, although nowadays many cars look like that, which isn't bad, just almost natural. Everything is clean, easy to operate, and easy to understand. There's a shallow tray in the top of the center console storage bin, and a deep compartment under that; as one lady on the press launch said, it's big enough to stash her cat, on road trips.  the available mygig multimedia i.

2007 dodge nitro review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new mid-size suv. introductionthe 2007 dodge nitro is an all new mid-size suv. Dodge redesigned the full-size durango in 2004, and since then has been planning the nitro, which is 22 inches shorter. There are many mid-size suvs out there, and dodge wanted the nitro to be distinctive, in order to keep up its reputation for bold styling. The result is a very squared-off vehicle, with exaggerated fender flares.  the nitro looks and feels larger than its size, with a high seating position that suv owners like, and good cabin space. It features load 'n' go, a cargo storage system whereby the rear seats and front passenger seat fold totally flat in seconds; additionally, the cargo floor slides rearward out over the rear bumper, and can hold 400 pounds, making the loading of heavy objects much easier. The r/t comes with a sports suspension with 20-inch wheels and goodyear eagle tires. The r/t is equipped like the slt, though it also has sirius satellite radio.  options for all three models include a power sunroof, foglamps, engine block heater, full-size spare tire, and trailer tow package. Full-time 4wd is an option on the part-time 4wd sxt and slt models. Options for the slt and r/t include leather upholstery, navigation system, remote start, hands-free phone, am/fm/6cd/cd/dvd/mp3 sound system with eight speakers plus subwoofer. The optional mygig multimedia infotainment system features navigation, audio, entertainment and communication wrapped into one, along with voice command and a 20-gigabyte hard drive to store music and photos. walkarounddodge publicity makes a big thing about the nitro's looks, citing its so-called athleticism. The load 'n go function quickly and easily flops the 60/40 rear seats and front passenger seat totally flat. With the liftgate raised, the carpeted (washable vinyl on the sxt) cargo floor slides rearward 18 inches, out over the bumper, saving a loader's back. The 3. 7-liter engine is rather harsh-sounding, but the nitro's sound-deadening material muffles it well.  finally, the air conditioning might be fine on a normal hot day, but it seemed marginal for searing conditions. We drove from san diego to palm springs on a september day, and when we got there it was 104 degrees. The ac was going full blast, and it wasn't doing the job. The fan was blowing strong, but the air coming out of the vents wasn't cold enough to cool the cabin. driving impressionafter long driv. 2001 dodge ram 2500 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. A heavy-duty full-size with everyday comfort. introductionthough it's now the oldest design among current full-size pickups, the dodge ram may still be the best-looking truck on the market. Clearly, it's the most stylish.  it drives and rides well with quick steering and excellent brakes. Five engines are offered: 3. 9-liter v6, 5. 2-liter v8, 5. 9-liter v8, 8. 0-liter v10 and two cummins 5. 9-liter diesel inline-6 choices. Every engine comes with a choice of 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission. Short and long beds are available.  the 5. 2-liter v8 produces 230 horsepower, while the 5. 9-liter v8 generates 245 horsepower and an impressive 335 pounds-feet of torque. The basic cummins diesel produces 235 horsepower and 460 pounds-feet of torque, while the new-for-2001 high-output version cranks out 245 horsepower and a stump-pulling 505 pounds-feet of torque.  standard, club cab and quad cab bodies are available in lt, laramie slt, and sst trim levels. The bold design with broad-shouldered front fenders is reminiscent of big freightliners steaming down the road with a full load of logs. It remains the best-looking pickup on the market. To improve structural rigidity, dodge designed a beam that runs laterally under the truck, and reinforced both the a and c pillars. Side door guard beams were also added to improve protection from side impacts.  the optional sport package comes with a body-colored grille and front and rear bumpers, decals, fog lamps, outline white letter tires, and cast aluminum wheels. The absence of a b-pillar makes it much easier to get in or out of the rear seat; it also makes it much easier to stick something behind the front seats. This includes a new steering wheel design, a big storage compartment, an extra power point, and new cupholders designed to handle any commercially available drink container. Other recent improvements include a keyless remote entry system, an upgraded base sound system, a cassette and cd sound system option and a new center console. The instrument pod features vacuum-fluorescent odometer and trip odometer that are tamperproof, and there are driver-programmable keyless entry key fobs. Other interior features include heated power mirrors, illuminated power door locks and window switches, and an optional security alarm system.  the front seat in all rams is divided 40/20/40, with a huge fold-down center section that doubles as armrest and writing table. When no one is sitting in it, the center position provides a large storage box, with divided spaces for coins, cassettes, maps or a laptop computer. The front seat belts are integrated into the seats themselves, which gets rid of messy hanging belts -- a particularly nice improvement for the wide-open quad cab doorway.  the quad cab rear seat is the same one used in other extended cab versions. It's handy for children, pets and petite adults, but it is not very comfortable for adults on long trips. The bench portion of the seat flips up out of the way effortlessly from either side for hauling tools or cargo. The power window option comes with an express-down switch on the driver's side. Steering wheel mounted radio controls are optional. There are two new overhead console designs; one with and one without trip computer. This engine has a ton of torque and a broad power band, which makes it a great deal of fun to drive. Passing is effortless. The manual transmission can add flexibility in off-road situations, but we recommend the automatic for street use. Rear suspension is a conventional live axle with leaf springs designed to carry heavy loads. The dodge v8 pickup truck has for years had a special kind of presence on the street, and the ram backs up that presence with excellent street manners and ride.  steering revisions that were new last year make steering much more precise than earlier models. Steering in the earlier rams was light and quick, but had a lot of dead space on-center and seemed to require constant left-right adjustments.  braking, with discs in front, drums in rear, is exemplary. The ram stops quickly with superb straight-line stability. Recent improvements to the instrumentation, powertrain and body combinations have made it an all-around better truck.

2005 dodge durango review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Believe it or not, refinement. introductionthe dodge durango is big and powerful with bold styling. Yet it's surprisingly refined, benefiting from a complete redesign for the 2004 model year. It's quiet, it rides smoothly, and its handling is stable and relatively agile. Efficient packaging has resulted in lots of cabin space for people and cargo.  the first-generation durango was rough around the edges, but the current model is far more refined. Inside is a quiet, roomy, comfortable and technologically sophisticated cabin. Bigger than the first-generation models, the durango now fits between the chevy tahoe and ford expedition in terms of size. A space-efficient design makes maximum use of the durango's size and it can seat up to seven passengers with the optional third row.  two v8s are available and both are superb. The popular 4. 7-liter v8 and the 5. 7-liter hemi v8 are smooth and powerful. They come with a five-speed automatic that's smooth, refined, smart and responsive. There's also a v6.  the 2005 durango lineup adds new sxt and adventurer models and the availability of heated cloth seats and a full-screen navigation system. lineupthe 2005 dodge durango features an expanded model line: st, slt, limited, and the new stx and adventurer models. A full-size spare is standard on all durangos. The 4. 7-liter v8 is optional. Also available are a bigger alternator and battery, an am/fm stereo radio with six-disc in-dash cd and mp3 player, traction control, halogen headlamps, heavy-duty shocks and springs, a two-speed transfer case (low and high gears for 4wd), side curtain airbags and a sunroof.  the stx package adds roof side rails, neutral-density gray body side moldings, running boards, and a six-disc cd changer. Aluminum wheels are available.  the slt 29,150) is available with an optional third-row seat (for seven-passenger seating). Slt comes standard with the 4. 7-liter v8. Optional is the 335-horsepower 5. 7-liter hemi v8 895). Both engines use the same five-speed automatic transmission. The v6 is also available.  the slt 4x4 32,130), the best-selling model, upgrades with body-colored moldings and fascia, a power driver's seat, interior wood trim, rear air conditioning, fog lamps and roof rails. Options include leather, satellite radio, power sunroof, power-adjustable pedals, running boards, a hands-free phone system and a dvd entertainment system with wireless headphones.  adventurer includes a roof rack with a choice of six rack systems or an adventurer accessory kit. The package also includes tubular side steps, reversible slush mats, rubberized washable cargo liner with built-in rear cargo organizer, and unique machine-finished wheels. The subtle mineral gray side molding and front and rear fascias visually identify the adventurer.  limited 33,300) and limited 4x4 35,590) add leather seats, a 384-watt eight-speaker mp3 sound system with six-disc cd, aluminum wheels, folding power heated mirrors, and a memory system for seats, mirrors, adjustable pedals. A full-screen navigation system with integrated control unit is optional.  safety features include optional curtain air bags, and we recommend them highly for the head protection they can provide to occupants in all three rows in the event of a side impact or rollover accident. Side-impact air bags are not available, however. The advanced front air bags deploy with varying power based on the weight of the person in the seat. Traction control is optional. Electronic stability control is not available. Redesigned for 2004, the durango takes styling cues come from the 1946 dodge power wagon.  durango's big-rig look is accentuated by its short hood. That short hood leads into a steeply raked windshield and sloping roof. The fender flares resemble those of a semi. The front fenders make the hood look as narrow as it is short.  the roofline slopes briefly downward at the rear, and the liftgate window curves in to meet it. This reduces that boxy look common on so many suvs and minivans. Durango's taillights are distinctive as well, looking like afterburners from a jet fighter with two big red stacked circles per side. The sheet metal is molded around them to suggest speed.  chrysler has an expensive new wind tunnel at its headquarters in auburn hills, michigan, and it was used extensively with the durango to reduce wind noise. The aerodynamics are fine tuned, including the mirrors and the subtle ducktail at the trailing edge of the hood under the wipers, for reducing wind noise over the windshield. The motor mounts were calibrated to reduce the frequencies and harmonics of each engine. The windows have an extra layer of lamination to deaden sound. Foam is injected into many of the body and chassis crannies, which would otherwise serve as tiny echo chambers. interiorwith a large amount of glass and huge cargo space, the durango feels big spacious. It's officially classified as a mid-size suv, like the explorer, but it's bigger than that and everything about it feels like a full-size.  there is 68 cubic feet with the third row folded away, 102 cubic feet with the second row down. The distance between the wheel housings is 48 inches, good for loading wide cargo. And from the outside, the liftgate opens very easily. The cargo floor is relatively low thanks to the rear suspension design.  the second and third rows are notably easy to access, as the rear doors open an exceptionally wide 84 degrees. The second-row seat easily flips forward with the touch of one hand, and the seatback flops flat just as easily. This is no small virtue.  the second-row seats recline and have their own climate control, so back-seat passengers can snooze in comfort. Details are thought out, including convenient grab handles cleverly molded into the stubby rear leg of the second-row seat, which ease climbing back to the third row. The slt has orange-hued wood trim, while the limited presents a cleaner look with its brushed aluminum. (that's real wood and real aluminum, not plastic.)  instrumentation is clean, handsome, easy to read and easy to operate. We especially like the simple black-on-white gauges and rectangular black venetian-blind style heating and cooling vents. The center console is deep, under a removable tray. Forward of that is another important compartment designed to serve as a fast-food bin. Two integrated cup holders with removable neoprene for different sizes of drink containers are provided.  we found the slt's manual heating controls and the wiper controls a bit fussy, and the high beams seemed a little lacking one wintry night. Better are the limited model's high-tech climate-control panel with automatic temperature adjustment. It's smooth and quiet, quite different from the relatively noisy, rough-riding pre-2004 models. Both v8 engines are good choices.  the 4. 7-liter engine is really good. It's powerful and really smooth. The 4. 7-liter v8 is rated at 230 horsepower and 290 pound-feet of torque. But it only gets 14/18 mpg in 4wd, using 87 octane, and the more we looked at that versus the 5. 7-liter hemi, the more we gravitated to the bigger engine.  the 5. 7-liter hemi is rated at 335 horsepower and 370 pound-feet of torque. That's a lot more power than the 4. 7-liter while providing almost the same economy, 13/18 mpg with 89 octane recommended, 87 acceptable. For $895 more, the hemi seems like a no-brainer; plus, it can tow up to 8,950 pounds with the optional 3. 92 rear axle, compared to 7,400 for the 4. 7. And the two-speed transfer case is standard with the hemi 4x4, optional with the other engines.  hemi, by the way, refers to the overhead-valve, hemispherical combustion chamber design, and harkens back to the late '60s when the 426-cubic-inch (7. 0-liter) dodge hemi ramcharger ruled. The 5. 7-liter felt a little more powerful than the 4. 7-liter, but it wasn't a night-and-day difference. The double overhead-cam, 5. 6-liter, 305-horsepower nissan armada feels like it has more oomph than the 5. 7-liter durango, which feels solid, but heavy.  for its part, the 3. 7-liter v6 is rated at 210 horsepower and 235 pound-feet of torque and 16/21 mpg. The shifts were incr.

2008 dodge caliber review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. New srt4 model joins lineup. introductionthe dodge caliber was launched as a 2007 model. For 2008, the high-performance dodge caliber srt4 joins the lineup.  the dodge caliber is classed as a compact car, though it's larger than the neon it replaced. A five-passenger, five-door, the caliber isn't easily categorized, combining elements from hatchback, wagon and minivan designs. Though very popular in europe, hatchbacks, especially five-door hatchbacks, have not caught on in american garages. The five-door hatch is a practical design, but most americans prefer the styling of a traditional sedan with a separate trunk. Maybe that's changing, however. All-wheel drive makes the caliber a capable winter vehicle.  relatively affordable, caliber starts below $14,000 retail, and fuel economy is respectable, achieving 24/29 city/highway miles per gallon in its most frugal form, according to epa estimates.  at the other end of the scale, the new srt4 version has a turbocharged engine generating 285 horsepower. With a starting price of $22,435, it is a performance bargain.  the mid-level caliber sxt model with the 2. 0-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission is among the more enjoyable of the standard models, but the caliber is no sports car. For driving excitement, the srt4 is the choice.  the front seats are comfortable, with lots of head room, and there's a large amount of cargo space here. Packaging is functional, with folding rear seats that have an optional reclining adjustment and an optional fold-flat front passenger seat to make room for a ladder or more likely, a surfboard. A 148-horsepower 1. 8-liter is standard in se and sxt, a 158-hp 2. 0-liter is optional for sxt, a 172-hp 2. 4-liter is standard in r/t, and the srt4 has a 285-hp turbocharged 2. 4-liter. The 1. 8 is mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, while the 2. 0 comes with a continuously variable automatic transmission (cvt). The 2. 4 is available with the five-speed manual in the front-drive r/t and the cvt in the all-wheel drive r/t. The srt4 comes only with a six-speed manual.  the se 13,925) comes standard with the 1. 8-liter engine and five-speed manual transmission. Air conditioning is not standard, nor are power windows. The se comes with manual roll-up windows and manual outside mirrors. Options for the se are as extensive as the standard equipment is basic. The power equipment group 595) includes power windows, outside mirrors and keyless remote central locking. The popular equipment group includes the power group, plus floor mats, a cargo area tonneau cover and cruise control. An uplevel stereo adds mp3 capability and six-disc cd changer. Sxt options include seat heaters for the cloth seats 250); sunroof 795); the driver convenience group 760) with dodge's uconnect hands-free cell phone link, homelink universal garage door opener, auto-dimming rearview mirror, vehicle information center and a tire pressure monitor; the popular equipment group 200) with fog lights, body side molding, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls; a navigation system with six-disc cd changer 1395); and the premium sound group 495) boston acoustics sound system with nine speakers, including two articulating liftgate speakers called musicgate power. The available sport appearance group 365) has a body-color grille, color-keyed instrument panel and shifter bezel, fog lamps, sirius satellite radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant audio controls, and cloth bucket seats with contrasting inserts. When ordered with the 2. 0-liter engine, it also has dodge's autostick manual shiftgate with six preset gear ratios for the cvt automatic. A trailer tow group 130) adds an engine oil cooler and a wiring harness.  the r/t 18,395) comes standard with the 2. 4-liter engine, the manual transmission and, new for '08, front-wheel drive. Massive headlights are notched into the leading corners of the front fenders. A pouting lower lip-like bumper separates the grille and headlights from a slimmer, lower air intake and (uplevel) fog lamps.  the side view shows strongly blistered fenders front and rear beneath a wedge-shaped beltline. The lower portions of the doors wear longitudinal moldings, again, body color or chrome highlighted, that look like a bi-level rocker panel but aren't, but that nevertheless minimize the caliber's height. Full-round door handles, either chrome-trimmed or body color, bridge scooped-out grip spaces.  the roofline arcs cleanly from its junction with the hood just aft of the front wheel wells over the side door windows to pinch off at the tail end of the rear quarter glass. Topping this arc but stopping at the top of the backlight (rear windscreen) is an unbroken, thick strip of black molding the caliber's designers say is supposed to work with the arc and the truncated back end to impart a coupe look. We're not sure why that was important or that it necessarily succeeds, but it does buff up the caliber's side aspect.  the back end pulls from the magnum, too, with a steeply raked backlight beneath a roof-mounted spoiler and above a mostly upright lower liftgate, employing a hatchback style arguing against any comparisons with a traditional station wagon. A relatively short rear overhang and oversize taillight housings add credence to the argument.  the srt4 can be distinguished by several exterior features aimed at both form and function. The ride height is lowered 28 mm in front and 22 mm in the rear. The front end features a functional hood scoop, dual hood vents, a unique front fascia with brake cooling ducts next to the fog lights, and a lower air dam. For 2008, the srt4 is available in only brilliant black, sunburst orange, bright silver and inferno red. interiorstep inside the caliber and the dodge legacy is loud and clear. Gauges are large, round and gleefully legible with black markings on white backgrounds. In the srt4, the central gauge is the tachometer instead of the speedometer, a change dodge says it made because the srt4 is a driver's car. To the left of the steering wheel in the srt4 is a turbo boost gauge; this area serves as a small cubby in other models.  the srt4 also has a reconfigurable display with what dodge calls performance pages. This feature can provide readouts of lateral and longitudinal g forces, 1/8- and 1/4-mile time and speed, 0-60 mph time, and braking distance. All of these controls are easy to reach, but the materials are cheaply rendered and lacking in qual.
